Why focus on mental health?
Mental health encompasses so much: depression, anxiety, and dementia, just to name a few. Mental health is important at any age. Here are a few tips to prioritizing your mental health:
1. Look through photo albums
For those living with dementia, look through old photo albums if it’s enjoyable for the individual with dementia. Try to eliminate distractions (such as the TV) during visits.
2. Attend activities
Feeling isolated and depressed is real – and it is painful. Attend community activities, and encourage your neighbors to join you! Avamere has a full social calendar filled with a variety of activities from exercise classes to games to outings. Some are even an open invite to friends and family.
3. Get an early diagnosis
Meet with your doctor regularly to asses your mental health. Be honest with how you’re feeling. A doctor isn’t there to judge, but is there to help you stay as healthy as possible – both physically and mentally.
4. Seek knowledge
Awareness is key. Talk to your doctor and caregivers about resources to understand more about your mental health.
5. Say something
If you’re feeling different, tell your caregiver. If you notice someone you love seems to act differently, tell their caregiver. They are there to support and help in any way they can – it all starts with speaking up.
